Dr Joshua Larsen is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He holds a BSc and a PhD. His research interests include hydrology, ecohydrology, biogeochemistry, water quality, and palaeohydrology. He is also affiliated with the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research.
Recent publications include 'Beavers can convert stream corridors to persistent carbon sinks' (2026) in Communications Earth and Environment, 'Global irrigation modeling relies more on pragmatic than empirical assumptions' (2025) in Water Resources Research, 'Systematic review and meta-analysis of Salix vs. Phragmites australis constructed wetlands' (2025) in Ecological Engineering, 'A national scale floodplain model revealing channel gradient as a key determinant of beaver dam occurrence and inundation potential can anticipate land-use based opportunities and conflicts for river restoration' (2024) in Global Ecology and Conservation, and 'Dam builders and their works: beaver influences on the structure and function of river corridor hydrology, geomorphology, biogeochemistry and ecosystems' (2021) in Earth Science Reviews. He contributes to projects on flood futures and creative adaptive solutions for treescapes of rivers.
Explore the University of Birmingham's pioneering research revealing beavers as key carbon sinks in European rivers, storing 26% more carbon through dams and wetlands. Discover implications for climate mitigation and rewilding.
