About Mohammadali
Dr. Mohammadali Sepehri serves as a Lecturer in the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering at Curtin University, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, a position he has held since 2022. Previously, he was a Lecturer at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, from 2018 to 2022, and a Graduate Research Assistant at the same institution from 2011 to 2016. Sepehri earned his PhD in Mining Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2016 and his MSc in Mining Engineering with a focus on Rock Mechanics in 2011, also from the University of Alberta. He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and a Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (MAusIMM). Additionally, he holds the Harvard Business Online Higher Education Teaching Certificate.
Sepehri's academic interests center on geomechanics, rock mechanics, numerical modelling, slope stability, rockbursts, and mining technologies. His research addresses critical challenges in underground and open-pit mining, including rockburst prediction, mining-induced subsidence, and slope monitoring using advanced finite element models and machine learning for microseismic event discrimination. Notable publications include 'Numerical modeling for rockbursts: A state-of-the-art review' (2020, Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering), 'Evaluation of mining-induced energy and rockburst prediction at a diamond mine in Canada using a full 3D elastoplastic finite element model' (2019), 'Rockbursting Potential of Kimberlite: A Case Study of Diavik Diamond Mine' (2017), 'Slope Stability Monitoring Methods and Technologies for Open-Pit Mining: A Systematic Review' (2025, Mining), and 'A Hybrid Game Engine—Generative AI Framework for Overcoming Data Scarcity in Open-Pit Crack Detection' (2026). With over 525 citations on Google Scholar, his contributions have advanced safety and stability assessments in the mining industry. At Curtin, he teaches courses such as Applied Geotechnical Engineering and Advanced Rock Mechanics, fostering expertise in practical mining geotechnics.
