Shepherd's academic interests lie at the intersection of postcolonial archaeology, critical heritage studies, environmental humanities, science and technology studies, African studies, visual studies, and decolonial thinking, emphasizing social justice in the legacies of colonialism, apartheid, climate emergency, and Anthropocene landscapes.
