Walker's research focuses on nephrology, including kidney physiology, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, cardiovascular risk factors, renal replacement therapy, diabetes and kidney disease, and drug handling in renal impairment. He has published over 200 academic papers, with highly cited works such as 'The effects of lowering LDL cholesterol with simvastatin plus ezetimibe in patients with chronic kidney disease (Study of Heart and Renal Protection)' (The Lancet, 2011), 'Diagnosing insulin resistance in the general population' (Diabetes Care, 2001), 'KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for Lipid Management in CKD' (Kidney International, 2014), and 'Study of Heart and Renal Protection (SHARP)' (American Heart Journal, 2010).
