Bathgate's research specializations include semen and embryo preservation, artificial insemination and embryo transfer, in vitro fertilisation and embryo culture, reproductive endocrinology, cryopreservation, semen analysis, oocytes, and animal reproductive biology. Her work applies these technologies, such as AI, IVF, multiple ovulation embryo transfer (MOET), and sperm sexing, to improve animal production and support conservation efforts. Current projects focus on increasing oestrus detection accuracy in sows through pen-side mucus testing and continuous remote monitoring for single-dose artificial insemination, improving post-thaw fertility of boar spermatozoa, and developing supplements to protect spermatozoa during freezing. She supervises a team including researchers on melatonin effects on ram sperm function, assisted reproductive technologies in camels, oestrous detection in pigs, pregnancy detection in horses, seminal plasma proteins in sheep, sperm preservation in elephants, capacitation of sheep sperm, and fertility prediction in pigs.
