Rate My Professor Roy Boland

Boland's research specializations include Latin American literature, Hispanic literature, literary criticism, Latin American politics, and the history of Latin America. He is the author of key books such as Culture and Customs of El Salvador (2000), providing an overview of the country's culture and history, and Mario Vargas Llosa: Oedipus and the 'Papa' State (1991), a study of individual and social psychology in Mario Vargas Llosa's novels of Peruvian reality from La ciudad y los perros to Historia de Mayta. His publications also feature articles like 'The Time of the Hero and the Dream of the Celt: A Case Study of Narrative Continuity in Mario Vargas Llosa' (2019), 'Mario Vargas Llosa: vivir para escribir' (2024), 'Nin da dereita nin da esquerda: a visión moral nas novelas de Mario Vargas Llosa' (1999), and 'Latin America's New Historical Novel' (1997). Boland has edited significant volumes including Australia and Galicia: Defeating the Tyranny of Distance (2008, with María Jesús Lorenzo Modia), El gemido en canto: Poems and critical articles on César Vallejo (2008, with Néstor Tenorio Requejo), Identidades locales y regionales en el mundo globalizado (2005), Place, Memory, Identities: Australia, Spain, and the New World (2004), and De la guerra a la paz: Perspectivas críticas sobre la literatura moderna centroamericana (2003, with Ricardo Roque Baldovinos).

In recognition of his scholarly contributions, Boland received the Cruz de Oficial de la Orden de Isabel la Católica in 2009. He is a member of the Sydney University Research Community Latin America, fostering research in cultural and literary studies. Boland has delivered public lectures and engaged in dialogues on major Latin American authors, including as a personal friend and critic of Mario Vargas Llosa.
