Dr. Rout's expertise lies in refrigeration engineering, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), cryogenics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermal systems. He leads efforts in designing closed-cycle regenerative cryorefrigerators, particularly low-speed GM and GM-type Pulse Tube cryocoolers. A key accomplishment is the design and fabrication of a single-stage GM refrigerator that reached 30 Kelvin, a landmark for indigenous cryogenic equipment in India. His laboratory has produced supporting technologies such as a retort-type vacuum furnace, membrane-type nitrogen generator, and Arduino-based nitrogen purity meter. Funding from agencies like the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences supports his projects.
