Shion Yamashika is an Assistant Professor in Cluster III (Fundamental Science and Engineering) and the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Electro-Communications. She joined the university in April 2025. Prior to this appointment, she served as a JSPS Special Research Fellow DC1 from April 2022 to March 2025. Yamashika completed her academic training at Chuo University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Faculty of Science and Engineering in March 2020, a Master of Science in Physics from the Graduate School of Science and Engineering in March 2022, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from the same graduate school in March 2025.
Her research focuses on quantum many-body physics and mathematical physics, with particular emphasis on entanglement dynamics, symmetry breaking, the quantum Mpemba effect, and related phenomena in quantum systems such as free fermions, bosons in optical lattices, and long-range spin systems. Key publications include “Quantum Mpemba effect in long-range spin systems” (Physical Review Letters, 2026), “Quenching from superfluid to free bosons in two dimensions: Entanglement, symmetries, and the quantum Mpemba effect” (Physical Review A, 2025), “Entanglement asymmetry and quantum Mpemba effect in two-dimensional free-fermion systems” (Physical Review B, 2024), and “Phase Transitions and Noise Robustness of Quantum Graph States” (Quantum, 2026). She received the Japan Physical Society Student Excellent Presentation Award at the 2025 Spring Meeting for work on the microscopic origin of the quantum Mpemba effect in ion-trap quantum simulators. Yamashika has delivered numerous presentations at domestic and international conferences, including meetings of the Japan Physical Society and APS, and holds competitive research funding including JSPS KAKENHI grants for young researchers and research activity start-up support.
