Rate My Professor Shyalan Ramesh

Ramesh’s academic interests center on bio-inspired swarm robotics, particularly for underwater applications. His honours research involves designing and building swarm robotic systems for underwater exploration, employing bio-inspired algorithms to enable coordination among autonomous underwater vehicles. A cornerstone of his work is the 2026 publication, as corresponding author, “A Comprehensive Review of Bio-Inspired Approaches to Coordination, Communication, and System Architecture in Underwater Swarm Robotics” in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (Volume 14, Issue 1, Article 59), co-authored with Scott Mann and Alex Stumpf. This review synthesizes 446 peer-reviewed articles from 2001 to 2025, proposing a multi-dimensional classification framework that assesses approaches based on communication dependency, environmental adaptability, energy efficiency, and swarm scalability. It analyzes algorithms such as the Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm, Whale Optimisation Algorithm, Coral Reef Optimisation, and Marine Predators Algorithm, along with communication solutions like acoustic, optical, and hybrid modalities. Additional publications include “Emergent Soft Skills Derived from Swarm Robotics Modelling Real-World Scenarios” (2025), “Nauplius Optimisation for Autonomous Hydrodynamics” (2025), and “Empowering Navigation: Sight Sense—A Customizable Assistive Device for the Visually Impaired” (2023). Ramesh’s contributions have been recognized with the CIO Excellence in Digital Innovation Award at the 2024 La Trobe Engineering and IT Showcase (team award) and the Top Project for Technical Implementation award at the 2025 showcase (team award). He has also presented his research at the GDG Melbourne Devfest 2025 on “Bio-Inspired Swarm Robotics: Algorithms, Systems, and Real World Impact.”
