About Sushant
Sushant Acharya is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Business and Economics, at the University of Melbourne, a position he assumed in September 2024. Prior to this appointment, he served as Senior Research Advisor at the Bank of Canada from September 2020 to September 2024 and as Economist and Senior Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from August 2013 to September 2020. Earlier roles include Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) from December 2019 to December 2023, Dissertation Intern at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 2011, and Consultant at the World Bank in 2010 and 2011. Acharya earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland at College Park in 2013, an M.A. in Economics from the same institution in 2010, an M.A. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi in 2007, and a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics from the University of Delhi in 2004. He is currently a Research Fellow at CEPR since December 2023.
Acharya's research centers on macroeconomics, monetary economics, international economics, and economic theory, with key contributions to Heterogeneous Agent New Keynesian (HANK) models, monetary policy spillovers, and household heterogeneity. His publications feature prominently in top-tier journals such as the American Economic Review, Econometrica, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, and American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics. Select works include "Optimal Monetary Policy According to HANK" with Challe and Dogra (American Economic Review, 2023), "Understanding HANK: Insights from a PRANK" with Dogra (Econometrica, 2020), "Inequality and Optimal Monetary Policy in the Open Economy" with Challe (Journal of International Economics, 2025), "The Side Effects of Safe Asset Creation" with Dogra (Journal of the European Economic Association, 2022), and "Slow Recoveries and Unemployment Traps: Monetary Policy in a Time of Hysteresis" with Bengui, Dogra, and Wee (The Economic Journal, 2022). He has organized conferences including the Melbourne Annual Macro Policy Meeting (2025), Bank of Canada Workshop on Monetary Policy Research (2021, 2022), and Salento Macro Meetings (2022, 2023). Acharya has received the Anne G. Wiley Dissertation Fellowship (University of Maryland, 2012), Best 3rd Year Paper Award (University of Maryland, 2010), and Prof. K.A. Naqvi Memorial Scholarship (Delhi School of Economics, 2004-2006). He referees for leading journals, has presented extensively at major institutions, and teaches Advanced Macroeconomics (ECON40002) at the University of Melbourne.
