Tomonari Hamaguchi is a Designated Lecturer in the Academic Research & Industry-Academia-Government Collaboration at Nagoya University. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Nagoya University in December 2014. His research areas include medical biochemistry, molecular biology, and neuropathology within the life sciences.
Hamaguchi has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications, often focusing on gut microbiota, mucin-degrading bacteria, and their associations with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Key papers include studies on short-chain fatty acid-producing and mucin-degrading intestinal bacteria in early Parkinson’s disease (2022), meta-analyses of gut microbiota in Parkinson’s disease (2024 and 2020), and investigations into gastrointestinal disorders in Lewy body diseases (2023). He has also co-authored work on bacterial mechanisms linked to chronic constipation, published in 2026, and earlier papers on topics including stress granule formation and axon development. His work appears in journals such as npj Parkinson’s Disease, Molecular Cell, and Science Translational Medicine. Hamaguchi frequently collaborates on projects examining the role of intestinal bacteria in disease progression and has been involved in competitive research funding related to Parkinson’s disease pathology.
Nagoya University reveals bacterial constipation, a microbiome-driven gut disorder where two bacteria dehydrate the colon, causing treatment-resistant constipation. Implications for Parkinson's and new therapies.
Nagoya University researchers reveal how Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron cause 'bacterial constipation' by degrading gut mucin, explaining treatment failures and linking to Parkinson's disease.
