About Vince
Professor Vince Mitchell serves as Visiting Professor of Marketing in the Discipline of Marketing at the University of Sydney Business School. He obtained his PhD in Professional Services Marketing from Manchester Business School in 1991, becoming UMIST's youngest professor. His academic career includes prior roles as Professor of Marketing at the University of Manchester, where he headed the Marketing Group from 2013 to 2016 and served as Deputy Head of the Division of Marketing, International Business and Strategy from 2016 to 2017. Before Manchester, Mitchell held positions at Cranfield University, the University of Hertfordshire, and the University of Luton. He holds a BSc, MSc, PhD, and Dip M. At the University of Sydney since 2017, he has contributed to the Business School as Head of the Discipline of Marketing and engaged in teaching marketing courses such as consumer behavior and marketing principles.
Mitchell has published five books and over 100 papers in prestigious journals, including Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Psychology & Marketing, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Economic Psychology, Journal of Services Marketing, Industrial Marketing Management, and Service Industries Journal. Notable recent publications include 'Selling Who You Know: How We Justify Sharing Others' Data' (2024), 'Tales of the Unexpected: Teaching Turmoil and Triumphs in Times of Crisis' (2022, Journal of Marketing Education), 'The 'how' rather than the 'what' of research impact' (2022), 'Where does all the 'know how' go? The role of tacit knowledge in research impact' (2021), and 'Spatial captivity: When consumers dislike or like feeling constrained' (2016). He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Marketing Management and Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management. Mitchell is a Fellow of the Academy of Marketing, has received Awards for Excellence from the Marketing Society, and is recognized among the world's top 2% most-cited scientists. His research focuses on consumer psychology, services marketing, research impact, and tacit knowledge. He co-hosts the podcast The Marketing Commute and delivers public lectures on topics like creative potential and data privacy.
