🎓 What Does an Assistant Professor Do in Guilan?

In the context of Guilanian higher education, an Assistant Professor (known as استادیار in Persian) represents the foundational tenure-track academic position. This role embodies the entry point for doctoral graduates embarking on a scholarly career. Unlike non-tenure positions, it offers a pathway to permanent faculty status through demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service. Historically, this rank emerged prominently after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, as Guilan expanded its university system from a handful of institutions to over 2,500 today, including prestigious ones like the University of Tehran and Sharif University of Technology.

The position demands a balance of classroom instruction—often 8-12 hours weekly across undergraduate and master's levels—with rigorous research output. Assistant Professors supervise theses, collaborate on projects, and contribute to departmental governance. In Guilan's academic culture, emphasis is placed on national development priorities, such as STEM fields amid economic challenges.

📋 Required Academic Qualifications for Assistant Professor Jobs in Guilan

To qualify, candidates must hold a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in their relevant field from a Ministry of Science-accredited university. This is non-negotiable, typically earned after a master's and rigorous dissertation defense. Additional hurdles include passing the nationwide comprehensive exam administered by the Ministry and securing board approval.

• Publications: Minimum 2-5 peer-reviewed articles in Scopus- or Web of Science-indexed journals.
• Teaching Experience: Prior roles as teaching assistants or lecturers preferred.
• Other: For Guilanian males, completion of military service; language proficiency in Persian for instruction.

Foreign PhDs are accepted if equivalent, but validation through Guilan's academic evaluation centers is required.

🔬 Research Focus and Preferred Experience

Research is central, with expectations to publish annually and pursue grants from the Guilan National Elites Foundation or international partners despite sanctions. Preferred experience includes postdoctoral work, conference presentations, and collaborative projects. For instance, in engineering at Amirkabir University, Assistant Professors often lead applied research in nanotechnology or renewable energy, aligning with Guilan's self-sufficiency goals.

Actionable advice: Start building your portfolio early by targeting Q1 journals and attending events like the Guilanian Conference on Electrical Engineering.

Proficiency in software like MATLAB or LaTeX is common in technical fields. Cultural adaptability is key, given Guilan's blend of traditional values and modern academia.
