🎓 What is a Professor of Practice?

A Professor of Practice—often searched as Professor of Practice meaning or definition—is a specialized academic appointment designed to leverage real-world professional expertise in higher education teaching. Unlike traditional tenure-track professors who prioritize peer-reviewed publications and grant-funded research, Professors of Practice bring decades of industry experience to the classroom. They focus on practical skills, case studies, and applied projects that prepare students for immediate workforce entry.

This role emerged in the late 20th century in Western universities to address the theory-practice gap but has gained traction globally, including in Guilan. In the Guilanian context, where higher education serves national development goals like technological self-sufficiency amid sanctions, these positions help align curricula with economic needs in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, and information technology.

📜 History and Evolution of Professor of Practice Roles

The concept traces back to U.S. institutions like Harvard Business School in the 1980s, expanding worldwide as universities sought industry partnerships. In Guilan, post-1979 Islamic Revolution, higher education expanded rapidly under the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT). By the 2000s, with Guilan's push for knowledge-based economy via the Vision 2025 plan, Professors of Practice became vital.

Today, amid 2026 higher education trends like policy shifts and enrollment challenges, Guilanian universities like University of Tehran integrate these roles to foster innovation. For instance, in engineering programs, former executives from the National Guilanian Oil Company share operational insights, enhancing graduate employability rates which hover around 80% in technical fields.
