QUT Workshop Technician at Kelvin Grove: What the Job Actually Involves

Inside a real fabrication workshop and the market it sits in

Queensland University of Technology is advertising a Workshop Technician at its Kelvin Grove campus, and the numbers tell the story before any candidate reads past the first paragraph. The role is ongoing and full-time, classified at Higher Education Worker level 4, known as HEW4, with total remuneration between $88,303 and $92,901 a year. That figure includes a base salary of $74,617 to $78,502, plus 17 per cent superannuation and 17.5 per cent recreation leave loading. Applications opened on 15 October 2026 and close at 11.30pm on 28 October 2026.

The catch sits in the eligibility line. The position is open to current QUT staff who hold ongoing full-time work rights in Australia. Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people who are not QUT staff are also eligible and encouraged to apply. Everyone else outside the university cannot apply in this round. That internal-first restriction matters because it changes who should spend time preparing an application.

A real fabrication workshop, not a storage cupboard

QUT's Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice runs the technical operations that keep the design and fabrication facilities at Kelvin Grove working. The advertised role sits inside those operations, supporting facilities used by roughly three thousand students, academic staff and researchers across six design disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion design, and interactive and visual design.

The J Block Maker Space is the largest of these workshops. Its equipment list reads like a commercial fabrication shop with a prototyping bent. The metal shop carries an engineering lathe, mill, bending, rolling and cutting equipment. The welding shop runs TIG, MIG, stick, gas and plasma. The timber shop holds a panel saw, mills, drills, a lathe and band saws, and it is the room where most of the student traffic converges in the fortnight before final submission. Adjoining rooms hold laser cutters, 3D printers, a vacuum former, a three-axis timber router, industrial sewing machines and a paint booth.

A technician in this environment is not a caretaker. The job description asks the appointee to assist students and staff with equipment, tools, materials and fabrication processes, carry out routine maintenance, prepare workshops, and help run demonstrations. In practice, that means being the person who explains how a material behaves under load and which machine can cut it safely.

The base rate and the exception

Australia's labour market data puts this role in a seller's market. Jobs and Skills Australia's 2025 analysis found 139 occupations in persistent shortage between 2021 and 2025. Of those, 71, or 51 per cent, sit in the Technicians and Trades Workers major group, concentrated in construction, engineering and automotive trades. The same data shows the overall national shortage measure has eased slightly, but technician and trade roles remain the largest single block of persistent shortages.

That is the base rate for any university trying to hire a fabrication-capable workshop technician: the candidates it wants can also take jobs in mining, construction, energy or manufacturing, often at higher base pay and with less administrative load. Universities compete with that reality every time one of these positions is advertised.

Consider a technician, call him M, who ran the J Block timber shop through a finals fortnight. The panel saw failed on the Monday of week 12, when every third-year architecture student needed to cut formwork models. M repurposed the band saw and a hand-router station, booked the three-axis timber router for after-hours runs, and kept the queue moving until the supplier delivered parts on Thursday. That is the exception that shows why these jobs cannot be treated as routine maintenance. For most of the year, the workload is steady preparation, stock and inductions. The job gets hard in the weeks when classes peak and equipment fails at the worst possible moment.

What the selection criteria actually ask for

QUT's minimum education line is deliberately broad: completion of an associate diploma in a related field, a certificate-level qualification with post-certificate relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. That wording opens the door to candidates who came up through a trade rather than a degree pathway. The selection criteria then get specific. The appointee must be able to maintain and repair equipment, set up and demonstrate machinery in a learning environment, apply relevant industry experience to teaching, organise and prioritise work under direction, and show a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and Indigenous Australian engagement.

What the position description does not list exhaustively, QUT's own Design Lab facilities page does. The J Block Maker Space runs induction and training requirements, and equipment-specific authorisation is standard. A candidate who has operated a lathe, mill, MIG or TIG welder, laser cutter, 3D printer, or industrial sewing machine has something concrete to name. Candidates without formal teaching experience should say where they have inducted a new starter or corrected an unsafe practice without humiliating the person.

Safety paperwork counts. The role mentions risk assessments, safe operating procedures and inductions. Queensland workplaces operate under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, and any workshop technician who has written a safe work method statement, run a toolbox talk, or maintained a hazardous chemicals register should lead with that evidence in the application.

What this means for your lab

If you already work at QUT and the numbers look smaller than an industry fabrication job, the difference is partly in what the package adds. QUT lists 17 per cent superannuation, 17.5 per cent leave loading, up to 26 weeks of primary carer parental leave including super, a purchased leave scheme of up to eight extra weeks, salary packaging for superannuation, vehicle leasing and on-campus services, and a study assistance scheme. In total, the HEW4 package lands between $88,303 and $92,901 before any salary packaging choices. A commercial workshop might pay $80,000 to $95,000 base for similar fabrication skills but offer less generous leave and super.

The bigger trade-off is workload shape. University workshop work moves in cycles. Teaching weeks bring high traffic and short-turnaround jobs, while research periods bring longer, more specialised builds, and the calendar between semesters shifts the job to maintenance, stocktakes and procedure reviews. Technically capable people who like teaching beginners and supporting design projects tend to stay in these roles for years. The people who burn out are usually the ones who expected a quiet workshop and got four classrooms of students with deadlines.

For an external Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant, the internal-first restriction is not a barrier. The advertisement explicitly invites non-staff Indigenous Australian applicants to apply, reflecting QUT's stated goal of lifting Indigenous Australian workforce participation to 3.6 per cent.

The one concrete step before 28 October

Go to QUT's application portal and read the full position description. Pull out your trade certificate, every current WHS ticket, and one example where you trained someone else on a machine or corrected an unsafe practice. Write your response against the selection criteria in the order QUT lists them, with specific equipment and concrete examples. Then submit before 11.30pm on 28 October 2026. The AcademicJobs listing keeps the key details in one place if the portal's navigation gets in the way.
