Offer Description
The High Energy and Plasma Astrophysics group (GAPAE) at the University of São Paulo's Institute for Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences (IAG-USP) in Brazil invites applications for a post-doctoral position within the project “Exploring Double-Layer Water Cherenkov Detector Designs for SWGO: Bridging the Gap with CTAO”, carried out in partnership with the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik (Germany) and jointly supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and Max Planck Gesellschaft, under the aegis of the scientific cooperation agreement between both institutions.
Position Focus: The postdoc will develop and run realistic simulations of the SWGO (Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory) detector array and help build the SWGO–CTAO joint science case, with active participation in both collaborations (CTAO and SWGO).
Goals: Build simulation/reconstruction pipeline to compare Water Cherenkov Detector (WCD) designs and array layouts; quantify performance (energy/angular resolution, trigger efficiency, background rejection, sensitivity, trade-offs); Define a SWGO–CTAO synergy roadmap for key programs: transients, diffuse emission/cosmic-ray anisotropy, pevatrons/multi-TeV sources. Planned visits to Max Planck (Heidelberg, Germany) and the SWGO site.
FAPESP postdoc Fellowship Conditions: 1 year (renewable); R$12,570/month (tax-free); relocation support included (research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship).
Qualifications: PhD in Physics/Astronomy (or related); experience with detector/air-shower simulations and/or gamma-ray/multi-messenger astrophysics; strong programming/data analysis; excellent English. This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality.
Apply: send Prof. Elisabete M. de Gouveia Dal Pino (dalpino@iag.usp.br) CV, publication list, brief statement, and two recommendation letters.
Reviewed until filled.
